News and Upcoming Events! IMBA Trail Care Crew Coming in the Fall!

Hello Cape Fear SORBA! Sorry for the lack of updates in the past couple of weeks! I promise though, things have been happening! What things? Oh I thought you would never ever ask! With that lets get right into things shall we?

Cape Fear SORBA Awarded Trail Care Crew Visit in Fall
Our big news of the week is that Cape Fear SORBA has been awarded a visit from the International Mountain Bike Associations famous Trail Care Crew! Part of this is a direct result of conversations that took place in Washington DC at the National Bike Summit. For those of you that aren’t familiar with the Trail Care Crew here is a little information, courtesy of IMBA’s website!

The Subaru/IMBA Trail Care Crew, on the road since 1997, is IMBA’s grassroots educational program and an authority on sustainable trail building practices. Two teams of professional trail experts travel year-round throughout the United States and beyond, leading trail work sessions, meeting with land managers and working with IMBA-affiliated clubs and the communities they serve to improve mountain biking opportunities.

This will be the TCC’s second visit to the Wilmington area. The first was in October of 2009 as Cape Fear SORBA was in the middle of becoming a club. They focused on the Blue Clay Trail and its drainage issues. The redesigned hilly section of Blue Clay is a direct result of the new techniques that founding club members learned during that first visit. This time the visit will focus on the new Brunswick Nature Park! We hope that we will be ready to begin building the next big section of trail by the time the TCC make their way here. A date for their visit has yet to be confirmed but expect their visit to be sometime in November. Additional information will be available as it comes in!

Trail Work Weekend June 4th and 5th at Brunswick
June 4th and 5th will be big days for the Brunswick Nature Park! We are on the verge of completing the next section of trail! However, we need your help to make this a reality! Work will begin both days at 7am and continue on until dark or until everyone is pure wore out! Bring rakes and shovels, additional tools will be provided by the club. Also be sure to bring plenty of food, water, bug spray, and sunscreen! Hope to see you out there!

CFSORBA Wins CCORS Team Championship!
Big congratulations to the Cape Fear SORBA race team for their team victory in the Coastal Carolina Off-Road Race Series last weekend! They claimed the championship with another strong showing at the Piranha Pit in Havelock, NC. Guess we know which club has the strongest riders! On a related note: we are asking people to please fill out a survey about the series so we know how we can improve! The survey can be found here.

June Time Trial Series Begins Next Week
Heads up everyone! Want to test your speed against some of the other riders in the Cape Fear Region? Well why don’t you swing out to the Brunswick Nature Park beginning next Thursday? This will be the first Time Trial in the Summer Time Trial Series! Entry is just $5! Racers begin leaving at 6:30 so be sure to get there early to get signed up! This is strictly for bragging right folks! One lucky racer will walk away at random with half of the entry fee’s as their prize! These Time Trials will be the first 4 Thursday’s of June and all will start at 6:30. If you have any questions you can email club secretary Jay Pearce at pearce.jay@gmail.com. Roll out and have some fun at the Park!

Trail-gating Starts Tomorrow!
Last but not least! Our brand new outreach program begins tomorrow with Trail-Gating events at both Blue Clay and the Brunswick Nature Park! Club members will be setting up shop at the trail heads to tell people about the latest goings on in CFSORBA! We also hope that this will influence some non-club members to join up and get involved. At the very least we want to inform people about what we are doing as a club and get them excited about the future. So come visit Secretary Jay at Brunswick or VP Austin (me) and Bike Patrol Director Jamie at Blue Clay tomorrow! We plan on being there from 10am till about 2pm. We will be doing this monthly with additional events as we get deeper into the year!

Thats it for now everyone, have a wonderful Memorial Day! Be safe and enjoy the trails!

Weekend Recap: Earthday and 5th CCORS Race!

Corey and Austin hang out at the Earthday Fest booth.

Hello everyone! Another wonderful weekend in Cape Fear SORBA land with our first of many outreach events as well as the 5th race in the CCORS series! So who wants to recap? You in the back? Ok lets recap then!

So first on Saturday CFSORBA had our first of many outreach events as we had a space at the EarthDay Festival at Hugh McRae park! Special thanks go out to Corey and April for their hard work in making that happen. They put together the entire event from idea to putting the booth together. So thanks for all your hard work! We gave out alot of information and we continually got alot of surprised looks when we told people there was mountain bike trails in this area. I guess thats what happens when you live so close to the coast!

Moving on to the 5th race in the Coastal Carolina Off-Road Race Series! We had another strong turnout, 68 people to be exact. This time we had a great turnout of kids racers, 8 total, to compete for bragging rights in our wonderful kids race! Want to see what that race was like? Well friend of the club Jeff LeBlanc took video of the kids that i am happy to post right here!

Congrats to all the kids racers for their great effort!

Now onto the adults shall we! The adults of course were tense and ready to go once the 2pm start time finally arrived.

Racers mass for the start

They certainly couldn’t help themselves! The course was as fast as I have ever seen it…and i would know, I raced it! Sadly I couldn’t seem to keep myself off of the ground for the first half lap! Here are a few more pictures for your viewing pleasure!

Don Brown hauling! Go Don Go!

Eventual 1st place finisher Armando gives us his best…well i dunno what he was doing!
